Supporting Indigenous women in safely accessing conservation spaces

Caring for Earth Class

A weekly class in Medan and Bukit Lawang that is open to the public. This is an education program aimed at introducing conservation as a part of human life. Through discussion, presentations, and speaker sessions we will share and expand Indigenous knowledge as it relates to conservation. This takes place in Medan and Bukit Lawang.

Ranger Program

An annual 4-week program in Bukit Lawang to support 7 Indigenous Sumatran women in becoming rangers who protect the forest. During these two weeks, participants will develop knowledge, skills and tools to be able to survive in the forest and to respond to situations. Each year, up to 2 participants will be selected to become official rangers with the National Park Authority.

Lopian Initiative

An annual peer support group in Bukit Lawang that meets bi-weekly for 7 Indigenous women of all ages to develop skills that practically relate to conservation and sustainability. We focus on giving opportunities to women to develop their capacity and skills in making their own sustainable products that they both use and earn a living with.

Srikandi Fellowship

An annual 2-week training camp to support 7 Indigenous women who express a strong desire to enter the conservation space and have an idea they want to develop. This group will also include a peer support system, networking, and will also act as an incubator. Each successful fellow will be awarded a small grant towards their project.
